Questions covered in this guide
How do you estimate a whole window replacement project?
Start with the number of openings and the type of work proposed for each one. This calculator multiplies the window count by one selected reference range and adds your extra-work allowance. It does not measure openings or inspect surrounding construction. For a mixed project, list the groups separately so a large picture window is not silently treated as identical to a standard operable window.
Which details belong on your opening list?
A room-by-room list gives each installer the same starting point:
- Room, number of openings and recognizable operating style.
- Approximate dimensions, clearly marked as estimates rather than order sizes.
- Desired frame, glass and hardware specifications if known.
- Visible staining, damaged trim or difficult operation.
- Whether interior or exterior finish work is part of the request.
Leave uncertain details open for the installer to inspect. A photo or homeowner measurement helps describe the project but does not replace final ordering measurements.
Why does insert versus full-frame replacement matter?
An insert approach retains an existing frame; full-frame work removes more of the assembly. Andersen’s insert guidance identifies frame condition as part of deciding whether that approach is suitable. Ask exactly what will be removed and restored at your openings. Our insert versus full-frame guide shows the scope differences to compare, including trim, flashing and concealed damage.
Why not multiply a style price by a frame-material factor?
The selected source tables do not establish a complete matrix of every window style and frame combination. The calculator uses the standard double-hung frame table or a separate style table; it does not multiply unrelated ranges together. If your specification falls outside that reference, enter a sourced unit range you already have and retain the proposal describing its size, glass, installation and exclusions.
Worked example: quantity can hide a scope difference
Illustrative arithmetic, not typical pricing: eight openings at a quoted $850 each total $6,800. If $600 of agreed trim work is excluded, the known project total becomes $7,400. A second quote of $7,250 is only meaningfully comparable after checking the same eight openings, products and installation method. “Trim included” still needs a description of removal, replacement, finishing and any exclusions.
What should you compare before choosing a window bid?
Use the contractor quote comparison with Windows selected. Match counts and installation methods, then record confirmed extras, specifications and missing work. Separate manufacturer product terms from installer workmanship terms; ask who handles a service issue and which documents you receive. A common frame label by itself does not establish equal products or equal installation work.
Putting it into practice
Window count supports a per-opening planning calculation, but mixed openings and different removal methods need separate quote lines. A small unit-price difference can be less important than omitted finish work.
Sources and supported claims
The selected frame table is for standard double-hung windows; the separate style table lists other types. The tool does not multiply the two tables together. Indexed text checked; other sections contain differing ranges.
