Questions covered in this guide

Prepare an opening list

Give each window a simple identifier, such as kitchen east or bedroom two. Keep that name on the quote, order and final checklist. Record the product and glass specification for each opening, particularly if the project uses more than one window type.

Preserve the product information

Photograph the installed product labels before they are removed and keep the order documents. NFRC explains that its certification program provides verified product information; it does not install or repair windows. The product record and the installer's work record therefore answer different questions.

Walk through the finished work

With the installer, review operation, locks, screens and visible finish work at each opening. Note any item that needs adjustment or repair and who will return to address it. Ask for the manufacturer's care instructions and the installer contact for a service request. This is a homeowner punch list, not a technical test of water resistance or code compliance.

Close out the records

Ask for applicable warranty documents, the final scope, and inspection records where required. NFRC notes that installation affects actual performance and is not included in its product ratings. If a product was substituted, reconcile the final order with what was installed. Save the record with your window budget and photos so a future service request can identify the opening and product. You do not need to judge hidden installation details yourself; ask the installer to explain and document the work before it is concealed.

Putting it into practice

An opening identifier connects the quote, installed product and later service request. This workflow separates homeowner observations from technical installation verification and creates a practical closeout record.

Sources and supported claims

NFRC administers product certification rather than installation, and its ratings do not account for installation quality.
