Questions covered in this guide
Decide what finished means
Ask whether the proposed interior arrives unfinished, primed, painted or stained. Write the answer beside each opening rather than accepting a general wood-interior description. If you want to match existing trim, bring a representative sample or photograph and identify how the match will be approved. A product order and a finished-room expectation can otherwise describe different work.
Use the maker’s finishing directions
Pella recommends preparation before finishing wood surfaces. It calls for finish curing before closing treated units. Ask for the directions covering your exact product and finish. Have the contractor explain which surfaces must be treated and which must remain untouched. This is a scope discussion, not a generic painting procedure. The product manufacturer and coating instructions should govern preparation, materials and timing.
Assign each step to a person
Make columns for sample approval, preparation, coating application, protection of glass and hardware, curing, final adjustment and touch-up. Identify the responsible company for every column. Ask how the windows will be protected if installation and finishing happen on different dates. Record who remedies an unacceptable color match or unfinished edge, and how concealed or inaccessible surfaces will be addressed under the manufacturer’s requirements. Keep temporary protection and room access in the schedule so finishing is not left as an undefined owner task.
Compare completed-room totals
Request a price that states the selected finish and included trim work. Separate optional upgrades from the work required to deliver the agreed appearance. Save the approved sample identifier with the order and ask for future care instructions at handoff. Use the window calculator for the replacement portion and add only a quoted finishing amount that is not already included in that installed total.
