Record the event rather than guessing the cause

Note when water appeared, the weather, where it was first visible and any nearby staining. Photograph the affected area from a safe position and keep previous repair records together. Describe whether the concern appears at the moving sash, trim, sill or adjacent wall. Those observations help a professional choose an investigation; they do not prove the leak starts where water becomes visible.

Separate product and installation evidence

Andersen describes water tests of its window units. It distinguishes those tests from installation testing. Ask the proposed inspector how they will distinguish a product issue from an opening or wall-interface issue. Request a scope explaining the areas to be considered and how findings will be documented. A product performance claim is not a diagnosis of water already appearing at your property.

Make repair decisions follow the findings

Use a worksheet with symptom, inspected area, evidence, proposed correction and remaining uncertainty. Ask whether access behind finishes is necessary and how it will be authorized and restored. If replacement is recommended, request an explanation of which identified problem it addresses and what surrounding work is included. Compare a targeted repair only when it addresses the same finding. Avoid approving repeated surface treatments with no documented explanation of the entry path or an agreed follow-up process.

Budget the investigation and correction separately

Get written prices for the diagnostic visit, any exploratory work and the recommended correction when known. Keep temporary protection or urgent damage-control needs with a qualified service provider. The window calculator can help with a supported replacement scenario after the scope is established; it does not price leak tracing or establish that a new unit will resolve an uninvestigated wall problem.
