Questions covered in this guide
Describe the problem in ordinary words
Is afternoon sun making a room uncomfortable, is glare the complaint, or is the window damaged or difficult to operate? Write the observed problem before choosing a product. A proposal aimed at solar comfort and a proposal to replace an opening may be trying to accomplish different things.
Ask what the film proposal covers
NFRC independently tests and labels window films for energy performance. Ask for the exact film and its performance documentation, along with the installer's explanation of compatibility with your existing glass. Request written answers about appearance, care, installation and applicable warranty terms. Do not assume a film proposal includes repair of a damaged frame or operating hardware.
Compare scope before price
For replacement, request the window specification and the installation work. For film, request the treated glass area, preparation and application scope. Put exclusions in a separate column. If you are considering work in only one sunny room, keep the comparison at that room's scope instead of comparing it with an unrelated whole-home replacement total.
Decide what still needs inspection
Ask the professionals to identify any existing condition that could change their recommendation. Product ratings do not guarantee the performance of a particular installation; NFRC makes that distinction in its consumer guidance. Our window calculator provides replacement planning references and does not price film. Use the resulting opening list to request two clearly bounded proposals, then compare how each addresses the problem you wrote down at the start.
Putting it into practice
The decision worksheet separates a solar-comfort objective from a repair or replacement objective. It avoids treating a film price and a replacement price as equivalent purchases or inventing a film cost model.
