Sketch both sides of the opening

Draw the interior counter, exterior serving surface, seating and walking route. Mark where the window would be when open and where a person would stand to close it. Include any faucet, shelf or shade near the opening. A serving window should be assessed as part of the room and outdoor space rather than as an isolated product photograph.

Confirm the exact configuration

Have the installer explain how the configuration suits the actual wall and exposure. Do not assume an attractive flush-looking detail has the same requirements or performance as every other sill option.

Compare the complete interface

Use rows for operating clearance, screen, lock, counter connection, water-management detail, finish work and maintenance access. Ask who designs and installs each interface and whether the counter must change. Have the responsible professional identify applicable safety or other local requirements. If a larger opening is proposed, separate structural review and surrounding work from the window price. Request a plan for temporary closure while the work is incomplete, and keep the responsibility with the contractor.

Approve a usable finished opening

Try the closing and locking sequence on a sample and reconcile it with the planned counter depth. Save the approved drawing, sill and hardware details with the order. Compare complete installed totals using the same scope.
