Questions covered in this guide
Draw the combination you expect
Label each component and mark which sections operate. Include the desired alignment, overall appearance and the opening’s existing use. Ask whether the proposal describes a factory-assembled combination or units joined during the project. A list of individual window models is not yet a complete description of the finished assembly.
Use examples without copying the design
Andersen documents a project using four joined double-hung windows. That example used a prepared buck in an existing brick opening. The example illustrates project-specific preparation, not a method to adopt for every house. Ask your installer which manufacturer joining and installation details apply to the proposed combination. Have the responsible professional explain the support and attachment plan for the actual opening.
Compare assembly responsibilities
Create rows for component windows, joining materials, support, handling, opening preparation, water-management interfaces and interior/exterior finishing. Ask which items are supplied with the windows and which are furnished by the installer. Request the final overall dimensions and applicable performance documentation for the combination. Have the bidder identify any limitations that differ from those of an individual component. Record the lifting and access plan as contractor work, particularly for a large unit, without assuming the homeowner will provide equipment or labor.
Use one consistent pricing basis
Ask for a complete installed assembly total and a clear quantity description. Do not compare one bidder’s component-window count with another bidder’s complete-opening count. Keep the approved drawing and joining details with the order. The calculator’s ordinary per-window examples are not a structural-assembly model; use the supplied total on a project worksheet and leave unknown preparation or repair work separate until it is quoted.
